Developers would create an experience that disappoints fans

Fans of the Final Fantasy franchise have long asked publisher Square Enix to use the power of the current generation of gaming console to remake the seventh game in the series, which is widely seen as being the best in terms of both story and gameplay.

[ADMARk=1]But this might never happen because of how easy it would be for modern developers to change the nature of the game, ironically, while actually trying to make it more modern.

Speaking to the Official Xbox Magazione Yoshinori Kitase, who is the main producer working on Final Fantasy XIII-2, has stated, “If I may speak as a game creator, if we were to produce a remake of VII, for example, I would be really tempted to delete things and add new elements, new systems or whatever because if we were to make exactly the same thing now, it’d be like a repeat.”

He added, “I’d be really interested in rearranging games or reshaping games into something slightly different even though it’s supposed to be the same game. But if we did that, the fans might be disappointed or ‘this is not what I was expecting’ so in that sense maybe some might say that it’s better to let memory be memory.”

The developer believes that the fans who are asking for a remake are the same ones who have come to appreciate the entirety of the Final Fantasy VII experience, including the less than developed mechanics and the negative features that a remake would seek to eliminate.

Square Enix has already announced at the Tokyo Games Show that it has plans to create a High Definition version of Final Fantasy X for both the PlayStation 3 and the Vita handheld.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is also set to be launched in Japan before the end of the year and in the West early during 2012.
