Final Fantasy III is a role playing game developed by Square in 1990 that was remade for the Nintendo DS. This was not a simple graphical overhaul like in the cases of the first two installments in the series that received the remake treatment, but it was a complex port, designed to take advantage of the capabilities of the Nintendo's handheld console.
3D graphics, full motion video intro and new playable characters were just a few of the new features that came with the Nintendo DS version of Final Fantasy III. The old nameless party members were replaced with fully developer characters that had real back stories. This was done in a very careful manner, as to keep the original storyline almost intact.
Furthermore, Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS contains improvements to the original's job systems. The classes were rebalanced, new abilities were added, the Onion Knight was replaced by the Freelancer class and capacity points were replaced with a small temporary punishment for switching character's jobs. The title also has an online component that allows players to send and receive messages to themselves through moogles, a creature specific to the franchise. This version of Final Fantasy III was released on the 24th of August 2006 in Japan, the 14th of November 2006 in North American and on the 4th of May 2007 in Europe. The port was developed by Matrix Software under the direction of Hiromichi Tanaka, one of the designers of the original version.
