Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales is an adventure game developed for the Nintendo DS handheld console by h.a.n.d. and published by Square Enix. Released in Japan on December 14, 2006 and in the United States in April 2007, it then hit the shores of PAL territories, like Europe, in May 2007. The title gained the appreciation of game critics everywhere for bringing back the much loved characters from the Final Fantasy franchise and taking a much more light-hearted approach to Chocobo's adventure.
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales starts when the Final Fantasy black magician brings a picture book at the Chocobo farm. This book is actually home to the great devil Bebuzu, and it sucks the entire farm into its pages. Chocobo heads on an adventure with the white and black magicians in order to stop Bebezu from reviving himself to full form.
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales combines field exploration like that of an RPG, with card-based battles. You're free to move around through the picture-book-influenced game world where, once you encounter an enemy, you find yourself in a card battle, referred to officially as a "Pop-Up Duel." You and your enemies take turns sending out cards to perform attacks.
The 3D environment is explored in the form of picture books in which you often have the lead role. The picture books take the form of Aesop's Fables and Grimm's Fairy Tales and have other characters from the Final Fantasy universe interpreting different roles in the stories. Also, simpler mini games are scattered throughout the world of the game but they do not affect your stats or your lives.
