Square Enix, the massive Japanese video game and publisher, has announced that the remake of their 1990 hit role playing game Final Fantasy 3 will be making its way to Steam in the near future.

Although the game has been around since 1990 in Japan, it wasn’t released internationally until much later, in 2007, when the company released it as a remake for the Nintendo DS handheld gaming console.

The upcoming Steam version of Final Fantasy 3 has been remastered, set to hit the PC with upgraded visuals and completely new 3D models and improved story sequences, as well as new visual designs for Job Mastery cards.

The version released on Steam will, of course, come with Steam trading cards and achievements. The upcoming edition currently has no price tag or release date, but Square Enix is bound to make the announcement soon.

Final Fantasy 3 added a bunch of new features to the then-budding franchise, such as the job-change system. Up to that point, players would choose their class at the beginning of the game, and they stay in that role until the end.

FF3 introduced the “job system” that has become a staple of the series, with players no longer being locking into their original choice, but instead with jobs being presented as interchangeable classes.

Each job utilizes different equipment and has access to different abilities, and a character’s proficiency at any particular job is increased the longer they stay in the job. Switching jobs costs “capacity points,” which are awarded after each battle.

The game utilized the turn based battle system introduced in the previous two iterations in the Final Fantasy series, and introduces the special battle commands for the first time, such as the Thief’s Steal ability or the Dragoon’s Jump, and the summoned creatures.

In addition to this, certain jobs also feature some non-combative abilities, such as the skill to open passages that would otherwise require a key.

The game’s story revolves around a group of orphaned youths, setting out to explore and restore balance to the world, uncovering event that were put into motion a thousand years before, when a technologically advanced civilization attempted to harness a source of power that would prove to be their undoing.

Final Fantasy 3’s 3D remake also solved some of the game’s balance issues, such as some classes being underpowered and thus resulting in them rarely seeing use, by introducing a revamped job system, also improving the way characters switch jobs.
