Apple starts selling copies that are still in stock by phone order

After discontinuing Final Cut Studio to make room for the new Final Cut Pro X software announced at WWDC 2011 this summer, Apple has agreed to continue to sell remaining copies to those who require the suite for ‘ongoing projects.’

Received with quite a bit of backlash from the creative community, Final Cut Pro X has been mostly described as a beefed up version of iMovie that sells for $299.99 in the Mac App Store.

Available solely as a digital download from Apple’s online apps marketplace, the software seems to push an abrupt learning curve onto producers whose former primary editing tools had been those found in Final Cut Studio, particularly Final Cut Pro 7.

Some film makers praised the new Final Cut Pro X, but many found it unusable for their existing projects.

As such, Apple has ceded to demands of having Final Cut Studio back on sale, but only as far as existing copies

“As we’ve done before with many end-of-life software products, we have a limited quantity of FInal Cut Studio still available through Apple telesales to customers who need them for ongoing projects,” an Apple spokesperson told The Loop.

The software will be sold for $999 to those who call Apple’s 800-number to place an order. Educational customers will be able to buy the video editing toolset for $899.

Final Cut Studio will not be sold through the Apple online store, retail stores, or the Mac App Store.

Final Cut Studio includes Final Cut 7, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, DVD Studio Pro 4, Color 1.5 and Compressor 3.5.

Described by Apple themselves as being the first choice of professional editors worldwide, Final Cut Pro delivers high-performance digital nonlinear editing, pro-level extensibility and interoperability, and native support for pretty-much any video format.

“Its workflow extends through the other Final Cut Studio applications and Final Cut Server for even more power. Whether you’re working solo or collaborating with a team, Final Cut Pro gives you the creative options and technical control that you need,” Apple says.
