Apple has released a free update to all its Final Cut Server users. The new release improves the general reliability, addresses issues with the check in/check out process for Final Cut Pro projects and fixes problems with double-byte character sets.

Here's what Apple says about the Final Cut Server Update 1.1:

"Media asset management and workflow automation software [is] designed for the unique needs of film and video professionals. Whether you work in a production boutique or a global news network, you can use Final Cut Server to free up more time for creative work," the Mac maker explains. "Final Cut Server can automatically manage thousands of assets, execute dozens of routine production tasks, and keep every member of your team in sync."

Final Cut Server Update 1.1 addresses issues with the check in/check out process for Final Cut Pro projects, Apple claims, while fixes with double-byte character sets are also in order with this release. Lastly, version 1.1 improves the general reliability of Final Cut Server. The update is recommended for all Final Cut Server 1.0 users, Apple notes. The update is free for all Final Cut Server users and to download this update they need to register their copy of Final Cut Server.

Final Cut Server includes a cross-platform client that enables content browsing, review and approval from within a studio or over the Internet. The software automatically catalogs large collections of assets and enables searching across multiple volumes through an intuitive user interface. Apple's solution is designed to manage workflow as assets and projects move from producer to editor to artist through the entire production process.

The application automatically catalogs content also generating thumbnails and low resolution clip proxies. Its broad search capabilities range from simple keywords to complex combinations of IPTC, XMP and XML metadata and can even configure a range of highly specific access controls that define user permissions on an asset or project basis. Customizable templates manage workflow typically found in broadcast, post and education environments, while sophisticated watch-and-respond systems can be configured to track the progress of assets and alert editors as projects move through the production pipeline. Producers are notified by email when a project is ready for evaluation.

For one server and 10 concurrent client licenses, Apple's Final Cut Server costs $999. It costs $1,999 for one server and unlimited client licenses.
