File-sharing is now recognized as an official religion in Sweden. The Church of Kopimism has been approved by authorities after several attempts to do so.A group of pirates in Sweden have been trying to get official status in the hope that it will make copying, as in distributing, modifying and sharing content freely, more legitimate.
"There’s still a legal stigma around copying for many. A lot of people still worry about going to jail when copying and remixing. I hope in the name of Kopimi that this will change," Isak Gerson, the founder of the movement,
told TorrentFreak.
Of course, official status or not, file-sharing of copyrighted works without proper authorization is still illegal and being a member of the church will not protect anyone from legal trouble.
While the
movement doesn't really help the case of pirates everywhere, there is a point behind all of it. Information can be considered sacred and the act of sharing it has been one of man's most noble endeavors throughout the ages, regardless of the current view.
