Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan appear on The Today Show to introduce first “Fifty Shades of Grey” trailer

The first, full-length trailer for “Fifty Shades of Grey” was released just a few hours ago but the online premiere was preceded by an exclusive look at it on The Today Show on NBC with Savannah Guthrie, with special guests in leading stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

Even though NBC advertised this as the premiere of the actual trailer, if you look at the first video embedded below, you will see that it’s actually an edited version, where the full trailer (the second video) was cut short and stripped of any scenes that were deemed “too racy” for daytime television.

Guthrie is the first to say so, after noticing that her two guests are acting rather awkwardly, as if something was wrong, after the trailer is shown.

In all fairness, the preview does get pretty steamy at the end, when the viewer is finally introduced to the world described in such detail in E.L. James’ trilogy of adult novels of the same name: when Christian Grey (Dornan) shows Anastasia (Johnson) just why he doesn’t “do romance” because of his “singular tastes.”

Readers of the book or those fans who have kept an eye on progress for the film probably know that the story is a very racy one, centered on the physical relationship of the two protagonists, who are leading completely different lives and have completely contrasting tastes.

Anastasia, for one, is a virgin, while Grey is into S&M and would never commit to a serious relationship because of trauma from his childhood. The bottom line is that, together, they will find a way to overcome all obstacles and be together – and the viewer is invited to go along for the ride.

Other notable things to take from this interview: Dakota says that shooting all those racy scenes was anything but romantic because they involved a lot of technical details and carefully planned choreography.

She also tells Savannah that she would not want her parents, who are also actors (Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith), to see the movie because she would not see it either if it starred them.

Jamie, on the other hand, spoke about how he would have considered doing the interview shirtless if this had pleased fans more, and, with regret, admitted that he could not go out and party when he found out he’d been cast because it was nighttime and his pregnant wife was at home.

They insist they had amazing chemistry on set, but during this interview they seem very awkward with each other and the spotlight. Maybe they’re already anticipating the media frenzy that’s about to be unleashed, but they should practice more at appearing more at ease in front of the camera.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” will be out in theaters on February 14, 2015.
