Bad news for “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy author E.L. James, potentially good news for fans of the adult novels who can’t wait until after June 18 to get their hands on a copy of the new book, “Grey.” A manuscript of it has been reported stolen, the BBC informs.

“Grey” retells the story of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the first novel in the trilogy, from the perspective of the male lead, Christian Grey. It was announced to great fanfare a little over a week ago and was supposed to start arriving in stores next week, and it was believed to be the first in a new trilogy of bestsellers.

Well, now a copy of “Grey” has gone missing and police are thinking it is headed straight for the black market, or that, best case scenario, fragments from it will end up in the media and online.

The BBC says that the theft was reported by publisher Random House and that an investigation is now underway to see if the person behind it can be found in due time, i.e. before it leaks.

James’ work has been widely criticized in literary circles and online, but her previous releases, “Grey,” “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed,” proved a massive hit with the female segment of the public. They even inspired a boost in adult writing and launched a film franchise at Universal.

The “Fifty Shades” trilogy is the S&M-tinged story of handsome millionaire Christian Grey, who falls for virgin literature grad Anastasia Steele. One is deeply messed up and not able to enter a “vanilla” relationship, the other has all kinds of romantic notions of how love should be like, and the books focus on their attempts at finding a middle ground, while experimenting with both options.

Hello all. For those of you who have asked, Christian's POV of #FSOG is published on 18th June for his birthday. It's called GREY... I hope you enjoy it. #FiftyShades #Grey A photo posted by E L James (@erikaljames) on Jun 1, 2015 at 5:00am PDT
