Former communist Cuban leader Fidel Castro has suffered a massive embolic stroke, leading to a cerebral hemorrhage.

According to the MiamiHerald, Venezuelan physician José Marquina leaked the news to the press just a few hours ago. He claims that this is the end of public appearances for the former leader, as he is slowly, and steadily heading for a vegetative state.

“He suffered an embolic stroke and recognizes absolutely no one. [...] He could last weeks like that, but what I can say is that we’ll never again see him in public,” Marquina stated.

Castro has not only suffered memory loss, but he has trouble eating and speaking.

“The people with a condition of this nature have difficulty eating and, of course, they end up with total deficit in their neurologic capacities,” the Venezuelan doctor added.

Castro is currently receiving medical attention at his residence, in El Laguito, Havana. He was last seen in public during the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Cuba, in March. He has stopped publishing opinion columns, which he titled “Reflections,” in June.
