You might have thought it wouldn't come true in your lifetime, but be prepared to be pleasantly surprised: holograms aren't a thing of Sci-Fi movies anymore, thanks to Provision 3D Media.

Provision 3D Media is a company based in Chatsworth, California. It claims to have developed working 3D holograms, just like in Star Trek, Star Wars, and basically every contemporary science fiction film.

Soon, we may find them in shopping malls, the entrance halls of large corporations, planetariums, hospitals, etc.

Provision 3D Media has posted a project on Kickstarter, one that shows small scale holograms actually working.

The holograms, moving 3D images that don't touch the screen they are being produced by, do not use gas or water droplets or anything of that sort. They really behave like what we've seen in the Thor and Avengers movies.

“We’ll never forget the “Holo-Deck” experience in Star Trek; the holographic shark in Back to the Future II; and how cool it'd be to tinker around with Tony Stark's holographic tech in Iron Man. Science Fiction has shown us what’s next. Now it’s time to make it happen,” the Kickstarter page says.

The technology shown by Provision 3D Media is, at present, capable of creating 3D images of up to 52 inches.

The next step will be to produce human-sized holograms. All it takes is money, as the prototype still needs to be developed and tested.

Provision 3D Media needs at least $950,000 to get things moving forward, and has 16 days to do it, since the project was posted on July 10. That's about €715,400, give or take.

It's actually surprising that more people haven't contributed yet. We've seen projects with much lower chance of shaking the world getting funded like lightning, but this one has only accumulated $13,079 / €9,849 so far.
