The Beta version of the forthcoming Fedora 22 Linux computer operating system was released on April 21, as reported by Softpedia, but it is time now to look at some of the features to be implemented in the next major release of the Red Hat-sponsored distribution, Fedora 23.

Therefore, among the highlights announced for Fedora 23, we can mention that the next-generation Wayland display server will be used by default for the Workstation edition, which will most probably be built around the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment.

Python 3 will also be used by default in the Workstation edition, and a Vagrant image will be provided for Fedora 23 Atomic Host and Cloud spins. The Vagrant boxes have been designed to be compatible with the Oracle VirtualBox and KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) virtualization software.

"While Fedora 22 is still under active development, we have a number of new features developed in parallel for Fedora 23 as well," says the Fedora Linux devs. "While all of these features are work in progress and the plans have not been finalized, we want to highlight a few major changes expected and invite your early testing and feedback."

Fedora 23 will be released sometime in October 2015

The Fedora developers also announced that XWayland would still be available in Fedora 23, in order to provide compatibility with X11 apps, and Python 2 would be included in the main software repositories of the distribution for those who need it. The Linux kernel packages will also be updated to the latest version available at the time of the release.

Believe it or not, the Fedora Linux developers are hard at work these days planning all the details for the next version of the operating system, including a Fedora 23 schedule proposal, which suggests that Fedora 23 Alpha will be released on August 11, Fedora 23 Beta on September 15, and the final release of Fedora 23 on October 20, 2015.
