Fedora 19 Could Replace Gnome 3 with Cinnamon

Fedora 18 (Spherical Cow) has launched without much fanfare, but the developers are already thinking about an important modification for Fedora 19.

One of the maintainers from the Fedora project, Eric Smith, has proposed the replacement of the default Gnome 3 interface with the Cinnamon desktop environment.

“This feature proposes that Fedora switch the default desktop interface from Gnome 3 to Cinnamon. Cinnamon provides a desktop interface that is more familiar to Windows and Gnome 2 users than the standard Gnome Shell interface, while being built from Gnome 3 components,” stated Smith in the proposal.

In theory, people willing to switch from the Windows platform to Fedora operating system would feel more at home on Cinnamon. However, this decision would also most certainly affect the fans of Fedora who have gotten used to the Gnome experience.

Whether this proposal will be adopted remains to be seen.

Why not just do a poll to see how many people want cinnamon or gnome. It would be more easier to do it that way along with the fact that it would make users happier to use cinnamon which has come a great way and not gnome 3 that has yea gotten a little better but still cant cut it. The cinnamon desktop has done wonders for users of Linux mint.

Don't understand what the big deal is with Gnome 3. If you don't like it don't use it! That is what makes Linux so grand as you can customize to your need.
This is a prime example why Linux will never be accepted by the masses on the desktop. Too much division and in-fighting. Why would I want something like Cinnamon if it resembles Windoze? Doesn't make any sense to me.

I found gnome 3.x very disruptive to my work environment. Mostly it took away work methods. I would have had to take time away from paying projects to learn "better" ways of doing thing. I really loved the 3x3 array of work areas and I love putting current projects on my desk top. I was real glad that xfce was there for us "not ready for prime time" folk.

I have used gnome-panel in Ubuntu 12.04, I also tried Cinnamon as well as Gnome 3 in Fedora 17. The first thing to start running an application is to find it's location in Menus/Submenus etc. It is the easiest in gnome-planel as in Ubuntu 12.04, I mean the gnome classic. I click the mouse on Applications and thereafter, I just need to move the mouse and all submenus and options are visible without any further clicks. Next I have to click is the application that I want to run. It is very hard in Gnome 3 in Fedora 17. Cinnamon is similar to gnome classic. However, I feel gnome classic is more convenient to use.

NOT.

Want Cinnamon? Install configure yourself.

Doesn't need to be the default.

I really don't care about the phrase "more familiar to windows". Why so conservative?

I should hope the developers of Gnome realize we're trying to run desktops, not tablets. Until that changes, I'll never boot into Gnome again!
