Fedora 17 Alpha, a Red-Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source project, a proving ground for new technology that may eventually make its way into Red Hat products, was declared gold.

According to the developers, Fedora 17 Alpha will be ready for shipping on February 28th, 2012.

They've also explained the relationship between the color of gold and the color of mustard. We all remember that Fedora 17 will be called Beefy Miracle and that the logo is a hot-dog, so the mustard reference is quite funny.

The new distribution is also on schedule. Robyn Bergeron, the new leader of the Fedora Project has stated that the last Fedora to ship on time was version 10.

Among the highlights of Fedora 17 we can mention GNOME 3.4, The GIMP 2.8, GCC 4.7, Btrfs filesystem, Thin provisioning, PackageKit and systemd integration, and much more.
