Paul W. Frields, leader of the famous Fedora Project, proudly announced on Saturday evening the codename for the upcoming Fedora 11 Linux distribution, scheduled for release at the end of June 2009. Leonidas will be the release name for Fedora 11 and it was elected from other proposed names, such as Blarney, Brasília, Claypool, Duchess, Euryalus, Indomitable and Zampone, with 1108 votes. "The Fedora 11 release name is: Leonidas. [...] Thank you to the community for their suggestions, Josh Boyer and the Board for their work on additional diligence searches, and Nigel Jones for setting up the voting." – said Paul W. Frields in the official announcement.

Among the features that will be present in the final version of Fedora 11, we can notice improvements to the boot and shutdown processes, KDE (K Desktop Environment) 4.2, Python 2.6, TightVNC as the default VNC viewer client, DeviceKit, DNSSEC (DNS SECurity) to prove the authenticity and integrity of the DNS data, support for fingerprint readers enabled by default (as secondary authentication method), multi-seat support (multiple mice, keyboards and monitors can be connected at the same time on a single host system), more intuitive and easy-to-use volume control, cross-compiler for Windows application (allows users to build and test full-featured Windows applications directly from Fedora (Windows OS not required)) and many more to come.

The Fedora 11 (codename Leonidas) development will start in exactly three weeks from now, on February 2nd, and will conclude at the end of June or probably at the beginning of July 2009, with the final release. Make sure you check with our website, starting with February 2nd when the alpha will be released, as we will do a full coverage of the Fedora 11 development process.
