The sandwich, dubbed the Protein Burger, comes in a standard and a large version

Here is a piece of news that will likely horrify certain animal rights activists who are dying to see us all turn vegetarians (yes, I'm thinking of PETA): there is a new sandwich in town, and it packs more animal protein than meat lovers could imagine even in their wildest dreams.

The sandwich, dubbed the Protein Burger, made its debut at a new Fatburger Joint in the city of Beverly Hills in California, US, earlier this week, on Monday, media reports say.

Truth be told, the Protein Burger's anatomy is not all that different to that of other sandwiches folks like to feast on. Simply put, it comprises two outer layers  with a whole lot of deliciousness carefully tucked away between them.

Still, there is one very important difference between the Protein Burger and run-off-the-mill sandwiches: meat patties stand in the place of regular buns. Check out the photo next to this article to get a better idea of what this sandwich looks like.

According to Entrepreneur, the standard recipe includes lettuce, cheese, onions, pickles, and tomatoes. Hence, there is no way to accuse Fatburger of trying to serve its customers nothing but unhealthy foods bound to clog their arteries while delighting their taste buds.

Just in case there are some people in this world who think that eating a sandwich that has meat patties instead of buns is not enough to satisfy their appetite, ingredients like bacon, eggs, guacamole, and chili can be added to the mix, the same source informs.

For those who want to go the extra mile (while jogging to burn off all the calories they'll get from eating a Protein Burger, some might want to add), Fatburger offers its customers the possibility of opting for additional buns/patties. In exchange for extra cash, that is.

Presently, a standard version of this sandwich costs $4.5 (€3.36). A larger version is also available, and it costs $7.5 (€5.61). It's unclear how much money one is expected to cough out for the extra ingredients and buns/patties, but one can only assume that the resulting sandwich will be well worth it.

Fatburger says that, contrary to what some might assume, its Protein Burger is quite healthy. “The protein-style burger is perfect for those looking to minimize carbohydrate intake, while increasing protein to sustain energy throughout the day,” a spokesperson explained in a statement.

By the looks of it, the American restaurant chain hopes that, sometime in the not-too-distant future, its Protein Burger will be available not only at this one joint in Beverly Hills, but also at other locations it currently owns and operates across the US.
