The new game features outposts and fortresses

Ubisoft confirms that it's significantly upgraded the outpost mechanic in Far Cry 4, based on the feedback offered by fans after Far Cry 3 came out a couple of years ago, from being able to defend them against enemies to completely resetting them or going up against stronger Fortresses.

Far Cry 4 launches next month and Ubisoft has made it clear many times before that it brings plenty of improvements over the already stellar Far Cry 3, not to mention a variety of fresh features, such as the open world of Kyrat, new weapons, characters, and mechanics.

Outposts are overhauled in Far Cry 4

Among the features first seen in Far Cry 3 and upgraded in the new title is the outpost mechanic. In Far Cry 3, players needed to take over enemy camps in a variety of ways, from going in stealth to driving a jeep through them or by unleashing wild animals.

In Far Cry 4, the mechanic is once again present, but Ubisoft listened to feedback from players of the last major experience and added quite a few fresh elements, according to Designer Vincent Ouellette, who has talked with StrategyInformer. These include attacks from enemies once an outpost is lost, not to mention fortresses that are harder to take out.

"We spent a lot of time after Far Cry 3 reading forums and reviews and seeing what people thought about the game, and now we've put a lot of effort into correcting everything. With the outposts we now have Retaliations and harder Fortresses, which are beefed-up, heavily defended outposts. They're like the boss of the district, but if you pick off all the outposts around it you'll weaken the fortress," he explains.

Retaliations reverse the role

The retaliation system reverses the role players have, as they must now defend from enemies instead of going on the offense. For those who really like taking over outposts, the option to reset already-conquered outposts is back, this time offered as a part of the game, instead of an update like with Far Cry 3.

"Any outpost around can be retaliated. Sometimes you'll be exploring the world and you'll get a call 'hey, we're being attacked at this outpost', and if you head there you'll get a reversal where you have to defend an outpost rather than attack it," Ouelette adds.

"And of course we have the option to reset outposts that we patched in to Far Cry 3, or you can just head to a captured outpost and choose to replay it perhaps with a difficulty modifier. We've even got a leaderboard for those."

Far Cry 4 launches next month on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
