Ubisoft has detailed the ways Far Cry 4 players can decide the fate of the fictional Kyrat country in the new game, as choosing to back one rebel leader over another can spark big changes to the Himalayan territory.

Far Cry 4 is the next big iteration in Ubisoft's first-person shooter series and the publisher's Montreal studio has made sure to add a few new elements to the core franchise recipe, including the ability to make meaningful choices for players, who control protagonist Ajay Ghale.

According to a new in-depth article on UbiBlog, during the story of the game, players will join up with the Golden Path rebel faction, which has been trying to get rid of Kyrat dictator Pagan Min for quite some time.

Thanks to the special abilities of Ajay, the rebels are finally on the brink of winning the civil war. However, before then, players will have to choose who they want to back inside the Golden Patch, according to Creative Director Alex Hutchinson.

"With the Golden Path, what we wanted to achieve was this idea that even though they’re the good guys, they’re kind of muddled about how they should achieve their aims," he explained. "So the player will be able to choose which leader of the Golden Path they’re following. They both want to target Pagan Min, but how they do it, why they do it, and what the consequences will be are radically different."

According to the developer, both leaders are close to Ajay but both have wildly different ideas about solidifying the power of the Golden Path and that of Ajay during the single-player campaign.

"Both leaders have their own reasons for why they do things the way they do, and at times the feuding between them goes to extremes. On the one hand you have someone hoping to end Pagan Min’s reign and preserve the old ways, which might be seen as 'repressive and strange' in a modern world."

"On the other hand you have a leader determined to bring Kyrat into the present by embracing riskier business ventures like drug and weapons in order to bring much-needed money to the country."

It's going to be interesting to see just how these choices are handled and just how much impact and weight they'll hold during the story.

Far Cry 2, a previous game in the series, tackled plenty of philosophical ideas and presented a lot of tough choices. Far Cry 3, however, had a more linear story that still featured a few interesting concepts.
