Far Cry 4, the upcoming shooter from Ubisoft, has multiple story threads designed to keep players interested in the single-player campaign, exploring both the history of Kyrat, the lineage of protagonist Ajay Ghale, and the growing rebellion.

Far Cry 4 launches next month and Ubisoft has started talking about the many ways in which the new title tries to improve upon its predecessor, from better gameplay to varied cooperative and competitive encounters and an all-new open world that switches the tropical islands of Far Cry 3 with the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat.

Far Cry 4 has different plot threads

Besides improving the gameplay mechanics, Ubisoft's Vincent Ouellette confirms to StrategyInformer that the story has also seen some love and care. Apparently, the studio hasn’t been that satisfied with the linear approach it used in Far Cry 3, so it offers multiple threads of the plot in parallel in the new game.

These new avenues for the story explore the rebellion movement growing in Kyrat against dictator Pagan Min, but also the past of protagonist Ajay Ghale and that of his parents.

"We have added a few more this time around, however with Far Cry 3 the story was a very linear thing and all the missions were sequential. Now we have parallel storyline threads going on at the same time that you can advance as you want. For one there's the Golden Path rebellion, but there's also your personal thread where your character is trying to find his family legacy and roots."

Ajay Ghale explores his past in the new game

According to Ouellette, Ghale plays a big role in many of these story threads, while exploring what legacy his parents left him in Kyrat.

"The player character Ajay Ghale was born in Kyrat but left when he was still a baby with his mother because of the civil war, and is back 25 years later because his mother's last dying wish was that he bring her ashes back to Kyrat," Ouellette explains.

However, returning to Kyrat fills Ajay with plenty of questions about the past, while the sudden introduction to Pagan Min adds another element of surprise to the whole adventure.

"He comes back and his name has a lot of meaning to people but he never met his father and doesn't know what his name means. His parents founded the rebellion basically, so finding out about them is a story thread. We also have other characters we haven't announced and you'll be able to pursue missions with them too, they'll have their own little stories."

As such, it seems that Ubisoft is working hard to make sure that the story in the new shooter delivers a solid experience. Look forward to hearing more about it in the following weeks, as we get closer to the game's release in November across the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
