The game is designed to take mature gamers back to their action movie roots

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is one of the most unique video games to be launched this year and the development team at Ubisoft says that it has conscientiously aimed to exploit the nostalgia that many players have for the '80s and bad action movies.

Dean Evans, the creative director working on the game, tells Eurogamer that, “It’s about that single glow. Mum and dad have gone to bed and you’re downstairs, there’s the Vic-20 over there on the black and white TV, the Atari over there.”

He adds, “You’ve seen those consoles change, but the one thing that’s stayed the same is these shitty action movies burning your retina, watching Robocop again and again and again and watching that police station scene in Terminator and rewinding it, pressing play and watching it again.”

In Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, players will control Rex Colt, a super soldier modeled on many of the heroes of classic action franchises, who will need to battle enemies in a world that has influences from Terminator, Predator and more.

The voice of the character will be provided by Michael Biehn in order to add even more authenticity to the experience.

The core structure of the game will be modeled on that of Far Cry 3, with a wide open world that will allow players to explore locations ranging from military bases to nuclear launch schedules.

It’s unclear why the Ubisoft team insisted to link the new shooter experience with its more realism-driven series or whether Blood Dragon will become a franchise by itself.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is set to launch via the Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network and Steam on May 1.

The game has been much teased by publisher Ubisoft and a hack of the Uplay service resulted in a leak last week.
