Still going strong

Ubisoft announces that Far Cry 2 has broken through the one million sales barrier less than three weeks after the game was released worldwide. The game is available for the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 and Ubisoft is now willing to say which platform generated the most sales, even though we're willing to bet it was the Xbox 360 version which managed to attract most gamers.

Speaking of the sales milestone, Yves Guillemot, the Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft, has been quoted in a press release as saying that “The holiday quarter is off to a solid start with the successful launch of Far Cry 2. The game is well on track to achieve our expectations for the year”. Sales of the title are expected to pick up as Christmas approaches and Far Cry 2 could reach 2 or maybe 3 million copies sold by the end of 2008.

Far Cry 2 is probably the best open world game of the year. After all, both Grand Theft Auto IV and Saints Row 2 are only open city games, as the environment surrounding the players is always an urban one, but Far Cry 2 manages to really produce an open Africa set world, where you can pretty much go anywhere in the wilderness or in the villages that dot the landscape. There are guard posts to take down, rebels and loyalists to be killed, spectacular fires to be spread and blood diamonds to be found in the game world, which is rendered in exquisite beauty by the proprietary graphics engine.

I've only spent a few hours with the Xbox 360 version of the game, as most of my playing time is taken up by Fallout 3, but Far Cry 2 seems solid, with quick and engaging battles when you stumble over an enemy patrol and with sections where you need to carefully plan your approach.
