Nothing prompts a more visceral reaction with fans of a certain series than having a favorite character killed off. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has shown us that it doesn’t even have to be a major one, if the build-up to the death scene is done right: you get the fans to like him or her, and then you off him or her in one swift motion.

Other shows, like FX’s “Sons of Anarchy,” have taken the forced departure of a major character to the level of art, and they play with fans’ emotions either by drawing out the events leading up to the death, or making this scene as unexpected and as violent as possible.

On the latest episode from the series’ seventh and final season, “What a Piece of Work Is Man,” fans bade goodbye to a character who’s been around since season 1.

So long, dear friend, you were the voice of reason

On the episode in question, just as viewers were starting to think that Bobby might get out of a very complicated situation with just one eye and one finger missing, he was shot point-range to the head. And then we had Charlie Hunnam, considered among the best male criers on TV right now, bawl over his lifeless body.

That scene was heartbreaking even for someone who might not describe themselves as a diehard “SOA” fan, so you can imagine how these diehard fans took it.

Since season 1, Bobby, played by Mark Boone Jr., had been the voice of reason, the only one who literally prevented the club SAMCRO from being ripped apart by internal tensions on a handful of occasions, because he always considered what was best for the club first.

With the voice of reason gone, there’s no telling what Jax (Charlie Hunnam) will do next. The previous season, he lost his beloved wife Tara, so all he had now going on for him was the club. Bobby’s death will most certainly change the game completely for him – and Boone hinted as much in his interviews after the episode aired.

By the way, he was just as shocked as the fans to find out Bobby would be killed off. Though he imagined that all characters ran an almost equal risk of being offed, he never actually thought Bobby would go.

The fans are in mourning on Twitter

As we speak, fans are venting on Twitter under the hashtag #RIPBobby. Some of the best reactions are included below, to show you that they’re very varied in tone, even though they all include regret at seeing a series regular go out like this.

Some fans are eager to see where Bobby’s death will take Jax, others are itching to see Gemma punished for all the evil she’s done (they also blame her for Bobby, of course), while some praise the SAMCRO veteran for going out “like a boss.”

There are also those who try to stir up trouble by saying that he can’t be dead, that this is just one of those silly twists even the best shows resort to occasionally to boost ratings. Boone made it clear the other day: Bobby is as dead as can be, there’s no going back after this episode.

Overall, though, there is a feeling of loss, like saying goodbye to a friend. Boone promised that Bobby’s death wouldn’t be gratuitous, that it would make better sense in perspective, once fans would see what it started. He’d better not have been lying.
