This is certainly not something one gets to see or hear everyday: a prestigious director, known for bringing the most gruesome scenes on the big screen and one of the most influential film personalities that ever lived, speaking against bloody scenes aired on television.
Spielberg spoke against the ads that all the television networks air prime-time, when children are watching, from his position as a concerned parent and not from that of filmmaker. Basically, he sent a very clear message to network executives, saying that they must pay more attention to the ads and trailers they air, because kids can be negatively influenced by them.
'Today we need to be as responsible as we can possibly be, not just thinking of our own children but our friends' and neighbors' children', the director said during a recent interview. He also had very strong arguments for his plea, citing shows like 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' and 'Heroes', which are promoted via trailers showing 'blood and people being dissected'.
Spielberg added that, until now, he prevented his children from seeing said trailers by sending them out of the room, but that doesn't mean that he will be able to do that each time they come on air. Television networks must show more responsibility in their decisions, by scheduling the promos at a much later hour, when the kids are already in bed, he added.
