Mega Man II, one of the greatest NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) classics ever released, has made its way onto the iPhone and iPod touch. Requiring iPhone 2.2 Software Update, Mega Man II puts players in the shoes of the famous blue bomber on a journey to defeat evil Dr. Wily and his minions.

From the iTunes App Store, the official description of Mega Man II for iPhone and iPod touch goes as follows:

Take control of the blue bomber in his most celebrated adventure. Battle through the full game, all 14 levels, and defeat Dr. Wily and his eight robot masters is this classic Capcom® action platformer.

• Utilize virtual arcade controls to control the blue bomber. • Rebalanced gameplay for the iPhone experience. • Battle your way through 14 levels, and conquer 9 unique bosses, each with a unique weapon! • Bringing the original classic NES game to the palm of your hand!

According to a piece over at 1UP's blog focusing on Apple platforms, Mega Man II for iPhone and iPod touch comes as somewhat of a surprise. The author cites lack of demand for the title as one of the primary reasons (really, no one would sneer at a Mortal Kombat one for iPhone, even if forums aren't filled with demand for the game?), as well as the control system and lack of music.

While the first two reasons are solid enough to make a good point, the third is (indirectly) dismissed by Capcom with a note on the App Store according to which sound on Mega Man II is defaulted to the “Off” position. Capcom explains that, in order to enable sound, gamers must select “Options” from the main menu and press the “Right” button. Toggle the “Sound” button to “On” and hit “Back to Game.” Start a new game and sound will be enabled, the note reads. The game costs 5 bucks to buy.

Would you say Capcom is trying to imitate 3D Realms and its release of Wolfenstein 3D Classic for iPhone and iPod touch? What other arcade / PC / console classics would you like to see released for the iPhone? Sound off in the comments and (who knows?) maybe your favorite developers will listen.
