A week ago we were announcing that PDA sales have scored results above expectations, and that this trend is more and more obvious. The main cause of this success is the mail fetching function which is almost identical to the one offered by the desktop systems.
Although the sales results for these devices gave Gartner all the reasons to estimate that PDAs
are regaining their popularity, IDC (International Data Corporation) doesn't share the same opinion and announces that PDAs are incapable of recover from their downfall. According to the figures presented by IDC, for the first quarter of this year, sales could record a sequential rate of 305, the total number of sold units dropping to 1.9 million PDAs.
The main reason for the extremely different results presented by the two most prestigious analysis companies is that IDC considers the Blackberry should be treated differently from other PDAs and cannot be compared to PalmOne products or similar. Gartner considers Blackberry a PDA, while IDC includes this model in the mobile device category.
The companies agree upon the trend regarding cell phones, and the increase of interest for these devices which despite their mobility include more and more functions has been confirmed by both of them. By analyzing sales results, it turns out that in the first quarter of this year, this category increased with 134.6% compared with last year, the number of sold units exceeding 8.4 millions.
