Analyst firm Forecasting & Analyzing Digital Entertainment, LLC, through its Research & Analysis division, has released a new estimate of the sales generated by digital distribution service Steam during the month of October, coming in at about 73.1 million dollars.

The best seller during the month was Fallout: New Vegas, the mix between shooter and role playing game created by Obsidian and published by Bethesda Softworks, which managed to move 308,000 copies during the month.

The rest of the top ten is made up of:

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Resurgence Pack from Activision – 228,000 3. Left 4 Dead 2 from Valve - 178,000 4. Counter-Strike from Valve - 114,000 5. Half-Life 2: Deathmatch from Valve - 78,000 6. DogFighter from Dark Water Studios, Ltd - 67,000 7. Frontlines: Fuel of War from THQ - 53,000 8. Medal of Honor from Electronic Arts - 52,000 9. Civilization V from 2K Games - 51,000 10. Half-Life from Valve - 48,000

A quick look at the estimated sales shows that high profile releases don;t necessarily generate huge sales on Steam but that a publisher which known when to cut prices on its games can generate quite a lot of interest and move some copies.

The service is also quite a boon for Valve developed titles, even if, like Counter Strike and Half Life, they are rather old.

Benjamin Schlichter, who is the director of research and analysis at FADE, stated, “With estimated revenues valuated at $2 billion dollars since launch, Steam still has more growth potential.”

Valve does not officially release sales numbers for the games which arrive on Steam, but the company says that the service is seeing constant growth.

The service currently runs a promotion linked to Thanksgiving which offer significant discounts for those who want to pick up more than 1 copy of listed games while also encouraging gamers to create wishlists with their favorite titles.
