Fallout: New Vegas Diary: Deathclaws, Cazadores and Fear

The Deathclaw Alpha Male in Fallout: New Vegas
Enlarge picture
Fallout: New Vegas is the next iteration in the post apocalyptic role playing franchise, and has been developed by Obsidian and published by Bethesda.

While Fallout 3 was a pretty challenging game, once you surpassed certain levels, enemies became extremely weak, no matter what type of weapons you wielded.

Supermutants, Ghouls and even the upgraded enemies that came in the downloadable add-ons like Broken Steel were extremely easy to kill, so you were just wandering through the Capital Wasteland killing anything or anyone that gave you a bad look.

In Fallout: New Vegas, things aren't that easy, as Obsidian really threw in some tough enemies, and, to really make sure you encountered them, scattered the Deathclaws or Cazadores right next to important locations in the game.

Deathclaws were present in Fallout 3, but while they only served as a bit of challenge in that title, the New Vegas ones are much more powerful.

One particular region, Quarry Junction, is filled with these creatures, as well as two specific versions, the Deathclaw Alpha Male and the Mother Deathclaw.

If you really want to test out your survival skills, try going there, but be warned that you need powerful weapons, lots of stimpacks and your most powerful companions to even stand a chance against these tough animals.

The second most dangerous enemies in New Vegas are the Cazadores, even though they don't seem all that terrifying when you first encounter them.

While these mutated insects may seem like regular Bloatflies from a distance, they can quickly turn into your worst nightmare thanks to their high speed, and the fact that they attack in swarms.

If you don't have good area of effect weapons, like grenade launchers or mines, the deadly venom of these insects can easily take you down no matter how many stimpacks you might have.

With these two enemies, Obsidian really made the Mojave Wasteland a more dangerous place, and added some fear into the hearts of those who explore it.

How did the first interactions with the Deathclaws or Cazadores go in Fallout: New Vegas? Share them below.

Jumped right out of the doctor's office at level 1 and up into the hills by Goodsprings with a caravan shotgun and a smirk at the big-winged fly. Promptly sent back to the autosave, smirk wiped clean.

only death came for each time i found these enemies.

Fear? I was expecting super mutant behemoths, hopefully they will release them in future DLC, along with post-end gameplay because I'm stuck at Legate's camp (recent save). The Legendary Deathclaw will be interesting, but having boone with the anti-materiel and incendiary rounds, veronica with the YCS gauss rifle, and me with the Oh Baby, the wasteland is gonna be empty when were done with it - if the devs can help out people like me whos only save game is at legate's camp - they should, because unless they do, their precious dlc won't be of much use, and I HATE starting over.

Comment #3.1 by: Dr Pwn on 08 Nov 2010, 03:11 GMT

to bad tom up there is a liar.... can only have one human companion, so sorry no Boone and Veronica.

Anyways, i walked to the quarry junction and was like awww deathclaws aint nuffin'....
run up got * slapped by a young one... needless to say i havent been back yet

Comment #3.2 by: Tom on 08 Nov 2010, 19:11 GMT

I meant either one by themselves is awesome, the robots are kind of a bonus. Btw Im stuck at Legate's camp, I save regularly with a single save, which is stupid I know, but shouldn't they just make post-end DLC so that you can play on after that bit - you could kill yes man and take over the lucky 38 and allow people in and get 1000 caps a week or something etc. and if you wanted to finish the game, you could choose to go into a pod like mr house or something. I think that would be a much better ending, plus I hate starting over. And I think bethesda would take an interest if others have done the same as me, as it would make the dlc useless to me

Boy, when I first found Cazadores, that was a nasty surprise. You forgot to mention that on top of their offensive capability, which is exceptional, they have a boatload of HPs.

My strategy so far against both of these...find an elevated location and then slowly pick them apart from a distance. In my opinion the cadazores are the more irritating of the two, as they flit around all the time making shooting difficult. I rarely use vats when targetting these, since most of my shots are from beyond an accurate range to use that system. Typically I'll only fight these when trying to clear a path...I don't go looking to hunt them...at least not yet. I look for some high ground that is nearby. It may take me a bit of manuevering to get up to a point that is feasible, but my main concern is that the enemy will not be able to directly path up to my location, or come around from behind me. My favorite technique is move to an elevated location such as a cliffside, and then jump onto the peak of a nearby rock. Pathing directly up/down the rock is not possible, which means that I'll have to jump down from it later, but it keeps me out of harms way as I pick things off from afar. I've found that the cadazores, while flying creatures, are "ground bound" so if they don't have a direct ground route to your location then they cannot fly up to you and attack (although most enemies will drop down to your level if they're above you on a cliffside, for example). The cadazores and deathclaws will run/fly all around in a frenzy to get to you, but you'll be safe to pepper them at your liesure. Granted, you'll do better when attacking while hidden, as cautionary or danger states will just drag things on a bit longer. Make sure you have enough ammo, and change weapons out frequently if you have them.

I was running around and i was trying to go around a mountain trying to get to a scrap yard didnt know what i was doing. I found my self next to Black mountain by some old construction equipment to the south of the brotherhood base i think. I found a young death claw at level 8. i got it stuck so i was able to throw dynamite at it. then shoot it then it finally died i said wow death claws suck. i didnt have any good weapons. I had the game play set to very easy to slowly start new ones and make it harder. and i was walking along and got jumped by 5 normal death claws from around a bend i tried backing into a spot on a hill to try and stay alive but i got my @ss handed to me on a silver platter. I played fallout 3 on the hardest setting and had no problem with death claws i spent months in that game and more months after modding it. long story sort (DEATH CLAWS SUUUUUUKKK ALOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Comment #12 by: Voodoo bob on 13 Nov 2010, 11:12 UTC reply to this comment

Cazadores shoot their wings, it really incapacitates them. Then just take them, once injured they are very easy to kill.
Death claws in the quarry are hard, but not invincible. At entrance to quarry keep left on the elevated rocks. Use a sniper keep in sneak for critical bonus. Some can be killed with a single shot.

Comment #13 by: Porporcel on 14 Nov 2010, 01:24 UTC reply to this comment

I was trying to find a way to New Vegas without going threw the path that contained a bunch of deathclaws and i noticed 2 cazadores. I tryed to avoid them but they killed me in 2 hits.

im level 30 i have 100 unarmed skill and like to use the ballistic fist with which i can kill a deathclaw quite easily in two power attacks i like to use the legion forward power attack. so anyway ive gone into quarry junction im doing good killed 8 or 9 death claws still going deeper in oh btw id already located red rock by this point so was just trying to explore the quarry kill as many deathclaws as possible and then i encountered the deathclaw alpha male jesus that bastard is hard hes bigger than a normal deathclaw and hes black and he killed me in two hits first hit took half my health i used a bunch of stimpaks got back to full health came out my pipboy and with full health he one shots me so far he is by far the hardest enemy ive come across in this game

Deathclaws.... 1st word: DEADLY, 2nd Word: UNDENIABLY TOUGH, 3rd: Instant Death

Comment #16 by: hawkeye on 17 Nov 2010, 16:47 UTC reply to this comment

today i sniped the mother deathclaw with my gauss rifle from the great kahn encampment then all its little baby deathclaws they didnt stand a chance i was much too high and far away from them for them to do anything and i do mean anything i was never even close to being in danger. i could see another deathclaw on the left hand side of the quarry got one good sneak which got his attention he was closer than the mother and on a raised so he managed to get to me but i just switched to ballistic fist and smashed him in his face as soon as he got tome it was funny watching the khans crap their pants when a death claw came running past them i had to drop down to a lower level to get a bead on anymore deathclaws but when i did and moved around to the right a bit i spotted the alpha male and a couple of other deathclaws my stealth HUD is saying caution so now knowing where he is i back up and back over to the left as much as i can he obliges me a bit and comes out into the open i get a couple of clean shots on him and he starts running now i know i dont want to fight this guy hand to hand ive tried it before and it was a bad idea so im really im sticking with the gauss rifle. very important do not waste shots he is very fast now with me he made all the way up to the big red crane near the khan encampment which i was next to at the time between me and boone we managed to take him down before he reached us though rex did help slow him down so then i went back over to where i could see the other two deathclaws sniped them they never stood a chance after the=at had to drop down a couple more levels to spot anymore deathclaws so now im only one level up from the main quarry floor but having taken out the two biggest threats here im less worried if need be i can ballistic fist any deathclaws that close in on me which i had to do you cant help it when your that close to the center of the quarry so definitely make sure youve taken out the two big threats before you make your way down there keep in mind id already taken out the four at the main entrance before going around the outside of the quarry to the khan encampment entrance and theres quite a few deathclaws on the way there as well ballistic fist was the weapon of choice for that journey and thats it quarry junction cleared out so basically stay as high up as you can for as long as you can definitely dont go into the centre of the quarry until the the mother and alpha are dead use a combination of the gauss or anti-material rifle and ballistic fist dont rush it take your time make your shots count and you should be fine

i found a new area with deathclaws today if you jump into the river east of the cliffside prospector camp and start swimming north youll see an opening in the cliffs on the east side of the river go in there and youll be attacked by a bunch of deathclaws couple of interesting points if you go into the water the deathclaws turn around and run back the way they came also i found that the deathclaws here were much easier than those found on the rest of the map with a ballistic fist i was killing them one hit each when i first went up i had no idea i was going to be ambushed by a large group of deathclaws but i survived if it had happened anywhere else without knowing what i was walking into i would have died i am convinced that the deathclaws here are easier i even killed an alpha male here in one punch from the ballistic fist totally bizarre

Sniper rifle from Gunrunners East Vegas elevated position on northern rock crusher bin, crept into from Great Khan Encampment = Mother and Alpha Male Deathclaw heads mounted on my wall. Plus a Fat Boy at the pond FTW.

Playing level 4, decent gun skills..Varmint rifle. Picked off the deathclaws over a long period of time. Thank god for sneak...I was on a cliff mind you. Tried killing them while on a tractor but the deathclaw alpha's reach was too far.

Comment #20.1 by: Deathclaw Hunter on 12 Dec 2010, 03:33 GMT

Hi,

I first encountered these beasts and they scared the crap out of me! I accidentally saved right in front of one without knowing, so every time he killed me, I re-spawned only to be killed again.

After re-spawning so many times, the Deathclaw glitches, so I managed to escape! Whew!
Well anyways, I came back to the Quarry after I reached level 22-23 with a fully loaded CZ57 Avenger w/ Armor Piercing Bullets and an Anti-Materiel Rifle w/ Incendiary Bullets.

With patience and accuracy, (headshots) I killed all the Deathclaws including the mother and Alpha Male. There are no more Deathclaws that I have encountered in the Quarry after that. When the annihilation was over, I decided to challenge myself to the Legendary Deathclaw. I went up to Dead Wind Cavern and wiped out all the Deathclaws in there, but it took be about 4 tries to kill the Legendary Deathclaw. Pretty cool experience!

Comment #21 by: Manny on 26 Dec 2010, 01:03 UTC reply to this comment

MY first encounter with the Death Claw on New Vegas was at level 6 with a single shotgun. I got one shot off before he killed me. I saw him before he came after me. I was at Primm Pass when I saw him, he was maybe 200 yds away. I turned around and went back the same way I came. I thought I was in the clear until I turned around and he was in my face, I shot one shell and then out no where I was dead... Scared the * out of me lol

Comment #22 by: aauman711 on 01 Jan 2011, 18:00 UTC reply to this comment

i tried walking to the strip immediately beginning to the game to have a discovered area to quickly travel too and not have to worry about it later. Unfortunately its impossible to get too unless you walk completely around or use an early stealth boy which i tend to save. The cazadores roast and toast you like its normal

snipe the deathclaws use unarmed weapons with the cazadors. ( powerfist zap glove balisticsfist etc.

Comment #24 by: Alexander on 17 Jan 2011, 20:11 UTC reply to this comment

found deathclaws east of the cliffside prospector camp, is there somthing hidden there? by the way dont save your game when your up there cause the deathclaws instantly respawn. i fund this out the hard way. :(

Comment #25 by: Calicondor on 31 Jan 2011, 01:23 UTC reply to this comment

to effectivly take oout cazadores, travel with companions, or use the gauss rifle. taking out the wings is helpful also, but stay away from them even still. the deathclaws, well, hahaha, they are a whole different story. my gauss rifle took a bunch of shot to kill just the babies. and if u see a blind deathclaw, their name is very decieving. they have perception of 10 and are very powerful. im level 26 and i avoid both of these at all costs. my companions die when i fight deathclaws so just try to stay away

Comment #25.1 by: damtem on 27 Jul 2011, 00:08 GMT

i avoid blind deathclaws, only had one experience fighting them and was killed very quickly whitch is supsrising considering i massacred the promonatory across the river and am an experienced deathclaw hunter, btw for those of you wondering what is in the promonotory it's a remnant power armor and a T51-B power armour, cazadores are easy, use unarmed or midrange weapons like revolvers
i havent tried killing the legendary deathclaw but am gearing up for an attempt, i have the remnant power armour and a bucket load of incendary .50mg ammo so all i need is a riot shotgun

Comment #26 by: we4gg on 04 Feb 2011, 09:15 UTC reply to this comment

well im on level 27 i thought i cld kill them with the ycs 186 but i couldnt kill 1 deathclaw

Comment #26.1 by: Finsihedit on 08 Sep 2011, 12:45 GMT

I managed to clear out Quarry Junction in less than five minutes with 50 Energy Weapon skill and the YCS! I guess as it's similar to a sniper rifle you need to have good perception and all that. And high energy skill. But one place I DONT want to go is Dead Wind Cavern :P
(Or maybe it's because I finished FNV like 5 times O:)

Comment #28 by: me on 11 Feb 2011, 02:12 UTC reply to this comment

First encounter with deathclaw, Quarry junction, lvl 7, 9mm smg, i thought i was tough and attacked one from far, it chased me into sloan and killed EVERYONE outside, i beat it by going in and out of a house about 30 time and spraying its face. BTW due giant rads scare anyone, i encountered one early on and it scared the sh*t out of me, at least deathclaws kill you instantly, giant rads run at same speed as you, and you need pretty strong weapons to kill them. It scared me so bad, id turn around and there it was hissing and clawing at me, i got away and didnt go back till lvl 22

Comment #28.1 by: kyle hoggarth on 12 Feb 2011, 04:28 GMT

Comment #37 by: redkiba on 05 Jun 2011, 08:58 UTC reply to this comment

the cazadores are chump change if u have a light machine gun or a mini gun which u can get from gun runners or u can pick up from super mutants in the black mountain quest as for the deathclaws I find sniper or scoped weapons work especially if u don't kill them u can get a good run and shoot with a weapon like this machine which u can get in dealing with contraez in mcarrin

Comment #40 by: Magikarp on 27 Jun 2011, 00:37 UTC reply to this comment

I've only played the game on very hard/hardcore and I've come to heavily rely upon Boone and ED-E to kill things and generally keep me alive during the game. Deathclaws weren't really a problem, because some NPC would warn you before you got wrecked by them. By the time I cleaned out the casinos, got the anti materiel rifles, and upgraded Boone's armor and ED-E's lasers Deathclaws became easy pickings if you played your cards right. I managed to kill nearly every one of those Deathclaws. But Cazadores... those guys are PURE EVIL. I first met them on my way to Jacobstown and they raped Boone and Rex (I was on his recruitment mission) with their incurable poison. I do realize I have antivenom, and lots of it, but my companions only get stimpacks, which speed up poison damage. I learned to avoid them, but they always managed to get in my way. When I was near Bitter Springs for Boone's quest, they popped up again. After managing to get away from them, it turned out I had to go back there for Return to Sender (one of the ranger stations). I despise Cazadores, not because there are dangerous to me, but my companions that I almost need to progress. It feels unnatural to leave my companions at the Lucky 38. Cazadores have hindered my exploration way more than Deathclaws, who at least have the decency to OHKO you and I can hit at least once in a while.

Comment #40.1 by: Lt Busta on 21 Oct 2011, 17:55 GMT

My first encounter with Casadores:
Oh, wow, look at the giant butterflies! (shoots one)..... OH GOD! RUN BOONE! RUN!!!

Comment #41 by: Fallout boy on 06 Jul 2011, 19:53 UTC reply to this comment

I never like it when I com across a Deathclaw or Cazador, but i have enough antivenom so the venom of the cazadors isn't the problem.

But the strongest enemy is Gojira, a fire gecko that is 3 times larger than the normal gecko and it will always win from the legendary deathclaw, unfortunately it has been cut from the game

Comment #42 by: thomas on 24 Jul 2011, 02:59 UTC reply to this comment

i kill them all pretty easily...the only enemy in the game to give me any trouble is the legendary deathclaw...and im playing on hard...dont want hardcore because i like carrying thousands of rounds of ammo and think it would suck being limited in my ammo because of weight.

Comment #43 by: damtem on 26 Jul 2011, 23:30 UTC reply to this comment

cazadores are easy, although i have to say i was raped by them at the start going north at lvl1
deathclaws... they take some practise, i find the anti-material rifle and the mysterious magnum best but if you run into more than 2 of them at a time your gonna really eat through your stims
i have decided to specialize my next charachter for deathclaw hunting so that should be interesting

Comment #44 by: Jaron on 28 Jul 2011, 17:27 UTC reply to this comment

I didn't even run into a Cazador before I finished a good portion of the game, because I did every side quest I ran into (meaning I gained levels). Plus, my friend Tyler warned me about them so I stayed out of the hills. But eventually I went for the Enclave helmet in the Legendary Cazador's lair and none of them gave me any trouble because Veronica went beast mode while I shot from a far. Really Cazadors are no trouble, neither are Deathclaws, because I took them on to get the Enclave armor, and they caused literally zero problems for me until I went hunting for them.. am I the only one?
