The threat is hidden in the file that's attached to the notifications

Cybercriminals continue to use fake billing emails in an effort to distribute malware. Experts have spotted bogus Vodafone notifications which inform recipients that their bills are “a bit more than usual.”

According to Hoax Slayer, the emails instruct users to check the attachments in order to find out why. The spam messages read something like this:

“This month's bill for your account is ready online. It's for £590.59. If it's a bit more than usual, it could be because you went over the minutes, texts or data included in your plan. Or made calls to 08 or international numbers. Or even used your phone abroad. You'll find more about what is and isn't included in your plan on your bill.”

The file attached to the emails hides a piece of malware.

Beware of such notifications! The amount of money you allegedly owe and the name of the company might be different, but if the email contains an attachment or a link that points to a website other than the official one, you’re most likely dealing with a scam.

If you’re a victim, be sure to scan your computer with an updated antivirus solution.
