Fake antivirus programs have been around for many years now, but most of them claimed to offer protection for Windows XP, Windows 7 or other older versions of the Microsoft operating system. However, with the launch of Windows 8, cybercriminals have adapted their scams.

Trend Micro experts have started spotting FakeAV threats advertised as being products specially designed for Windows 8.

One of them is called Win 8 Security System and it works pretty much the same as the older versions.

It informs the victim that there are a number of infections on his/her computer and that they need to register for a complete version of the program to have the threats removed.

Trend Micro has also spotted a variant of the malicious email purporting to come from the Microsoft Windows 8 Team, offering free copies of the new operating system. This means that the spam run is not about to die out anytime soon.
