The threat is designed to steal sensitive information from infected computers

Emails purporting to come from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) have been found to distribute a piece of malware that’s designed to steal sensitive information from infected devices.

Entitled “Tax Refund Notification,” the fake emails read something like this:

“After the last calculation of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a refund of 0676.14 AUD.

For more details please follow the steps bellow:

- Right-click the link on the attachment name, and select Save Link As, Save Target As or a similar option provided. - Select the location into which you want to download the file and choose Save. - Open the file Microsoft Word file to view the details.”

According to Hoax Slayer, the file that’s attached to the emails is a Trojan that can steal personal and financial data from the victim’s computer.

In case you receive such an email, ignore it. Also, make sure that an antivirus is running on your computer and that all your software is updated.
