Superstorm Sandy hit the US hard, and New York City in particular. However, some of those real-time images inundating Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr are not so real, after all.

According to WA Today, some of the pictures are screenshots from blockbusters you have probably watched before, others are just Photoshopped, while most are republished pics that have appeared in the media, in the past.

One of the most talked about Sandy virals, the picture of guards facing the hurricane at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia, was a fake. The photo was taken in September, on a rainy day.

The Statue of Liberty has been very popular among Sandy watchers, as many believed they saw the Statue fighting floods brought on by the hurricane. What they were really seeing were images from the 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow.
