A boyfriend trying to be creative with a marriage proposal has made his bride-to-be cry by setting up a phony arrest.

Ben Vienneau of Saint John, Canada never meant to scare his better half, but he enlisted the help of a friend who took the assignment a bit too seriously.

His friend, a police officer, stopped Marcia Belyea and asked for her papers. They were in another car so he told her that he would be taking her to the police station.

He had convened with the groom to then let him show up and pop the question, but he put her in the squad car instead.

He told her that she would have to pay a large fine and spend 30 days in jail, at which point the mother of two burst into tears.

Vienneau apologized and told her that he had set up the fake arrest proposal in order to win a radio competition for a wedding by the sea, Hollywood Gossip wrote.
