24 million systems have been infected with the worm

The Conficker worm, also known as Downad, was first spotted in 2008. However, five years later, the threat is still very much active.

Trend Micro has released an infographic with facts and figures on the Conficker worm. For instance, experts reveal that around 24 million systems from all over the world have been infected with the threat.

In addition to home users, Conficker has also impacted government organizations, businesses and even hospitals.

The malware has such a high infection rate that Microsoft decided to create a dedicated working group to stop it.

After Windows XP is no longer be supported by Microsoft, experts believe that the threat will not be so widespread anymore. However, some users will likely continue to use the operating system, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.

The best way to protect yourself against this worm is to make sure your operating system and the pieces of software you’re running are always up to date.
