As if the fact that it has been forced to file for bankruptcy weren't enough for Freedom Industries, recent news concerning the chemical spill that occurred in West Virginia about two weeks ago says that, the way Senator Joe Manchin sees things, the storage facility responsible for this incident must be torn down.
Thus, Huffington Post reports that, this past Thursday, the senator argued that, given the conundrum caused by the chemical spill, it would be best if the storage facility, i.e. the Etowah River Terminal, were moved from its current location, and the site remediated.
“After speaking to people directly affected by the spill, it is clear West Virginians are still very concerned about the quality of their water and the potential long-term effects of the water contamination,” the senator reportedly said.
“The first step to restoring confidence in our water system and ensuring West Virginians that their water is safe is to tear down Freedom Industry’s facility and completely remediate the site. We need to start from scratch,” he added.
The chemical spill in question translated into a water ban that affected about 300,000 people in the state of West Virginia in the United States.
At first, it was said that just one chemical had reached Elk River. However, it was later disclosed that the storage tank that leaked contained one other compound.
