The social network is tweaking its news feature

It seems that social network Facebook has begun experimenting with a new Trending News section which could mean that people will find it easier to filter the news.

Facebook’s Trending News will include five categories, namely Politics, Business, Science and Technology, Sports, and Entertainment, according to an AdWeek report. Apparently, the social category was left out.

This new filtering tool is meant to help people get to a topic they are interested in more easily instead of having to scroll through all the popular news that might appear in the section.

It has been reported that no other changes will be performed regarding the way trending news appeared in our homefeed, only that now we will be able to choose our favorite category and the news related to that specific section alone will pop up.

Furthermore, Facebook will also keep the old format, meaning that the ten trending news will still appear just above the five categories.

Facebook is perfecting its news feature

Last year in December, Facebook made the Trending News available on mobile. It was not a complete innovation, on the contrary, many were quick to point out the obvious resemblance to Twitter’s trending topics.

However, it seems that Facebook is rather keen on organizing its news feed, as the feature has gone through some important revisions lately.

Not long after the news feature was launched on mobile devices, Facebook announced that it had introduced a new option for it, so that when you go on a certain trending topic, you get to see conversations set up in five different categories: Articles, In the Story, Friends and Groups, Near the Scene, and Live Feed.

Furthermore, just a few days ago, Twitter announced that they were updating trends on mobile, and it also provided a short explanation of what a trending topic was all about.

So considering the competition between the two social networks, it’s not that surprising to see Facebook launch an improved version of its own real-time news feed.

The official announcement has not been made yet, but an inside source did confirm for Venture Beat that the company was indeed testing this new enhancement and that it should roll out soon enough.
