The use of social networks on mobile phones is on the rise, and the latest stats from Facebook confirm that, as over 100 million people are accessing it from their feature phones each month.

On Sunday, the web giant announced that its Facebook For Every Phone app – specifically designed for these entry-level devices – had reached this milestone, while also unveiling that it is mainly used in emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

“Facebook’s mission is to make the world more open and connected, and Facebook For Every Phone enables people around the globe to connect to the people and things they care about most, no matter what kind of mobile device they use,” the company said in a blog post.

“Today, millions of people in developing markets like India, Indonesia and the Philippines are relying on this technology to connect with Facebook, without having to purchase a smartphone.”

Facebook for Every Phone was designed as a fast and easy-to-use native application that offers support for over 3,000 different types of feature phones from various manufacturers.

The application comes with a comprehensive Facebook experience, providing users with features and capabilities that are included in the software destined for smartphones.

Owners of feature phones can access the News Feed, Messenger, and Photos through the app, while also being able to create new accounts, straight from their devices.

“This experience is optimized to use less data than other Java apps and mobile sites, making it more affordable to try and use. We also have partnerships with mobile operators around the world to offer free or discounted data access to Facebook For Every Phone,” Facebook said.

Facebook For Every Phone is based on technology created by Snaptu, an Israel-based mobile platform that uses the power of servers to deliver an accelerated and optimized mobile app experience.

The mobile application is only two years old, but it has already managed to successfully connect millions of people all around the world to Facebook, even those with limited access to the Internet.
