Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion and Facebook, one of the most popular social networking destinations today, have just announced the release of a new version of the Facebook for BlackBerry mobile application.

Available as version 1.9.0.20 in the App World, the new Facebook application offers users of a BlackBerry handset the possibility to enjoy a new feature that was included into the mix, namely Places.

What Places in Facebook is all about includes the possibility to “check-in” to various locations within a 1.25 mile radius.

Basically, the new feature works in a similar manner in which Foursquare or other location-based applications work.

Moreover, users are offered the possibility to “like” or comment on check-ins, as well as to tag friends at various places.

The new Facebook for BlackBerry 1.9 flavor of the application is expected to be rolled-out over the next 24 hours, it appears.

The new version of the application can be downloaded and installed on handsets running under BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 or higher.

Users interested in downloading the new application flavor should head over to the Blackberry App World on their devices.

In case there are some who won't find the new flavor of the software solution available for download for their handsets, they would have to wait until tomorrow, when it would be made generally available.

Of course, all of the other features that Facebook mobile applications come to handsets with have been included into the mix as well. Slowly, the app is providing mobile users with more and more appealing features.

Here's how the app is described in RIM's software portal: “Stay on top of your social life with Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones.

This free application makes Facebook services - like sending messages, poking friends, writing wall posts, inviting friends to join and uploading photos - available on the go! Take Facebook wherever life takes you and don't miss a beat!”
