Open Compute Project, a project started by Facebook with the goal of building an efficient computing infrastructures at the lowest possible cost, has just been joined by Red Hat.

Red Hat will collaborate with all the other members of Open Compute Project to develop new technologies, a new design, and most importantly, a next-generation datacenter.

Facebook has started the Open Compute Project in order to build datacenters using open source software and to share all the technologies that arise from this enterprise.

The project's datacenters are designed to improve efficiency through reduced energy loss, power consumption and re-use of resources, such as using system heat output to warm buildings.

Red Hat has coordinated with several large customers to participate in the Open Compute Project, starting with the certification of Red Hat Enterprise Linux on two systems that are based on the Open Compute Project specification.
