Jon Swift, a Facebook blogger "who likes to write about politics and culture", was banned on the social networking website because he uses a nickname instead of the real name. It seems that it all started from Facebook's Terms of Use which require the registered members to enter their real first and last name. But the question is how the Facebook employees managed to find out if Jon Swift is the real name or not since the blogger sustains he was never contacted by the website's representatives. All he received was an account
banned-like message without any notification or warning. "According to Facebook, I am a fake, a charlatan, a nonperson and all of my more than 200 Facebook friends are the victims of a cruel hoax. My crime? Violating Facebook's Terms of Service by not using my "real name." What's next?", Jon Swift wrote on his blog which is hosted by Google's Blogger. After sending a message to the Facebook employees, Jon received an answer from a representative who informed him that his account infringed the Terms of Use. "Fake accounts are a violation of our Terms of Use. Facebook requires users to provide their real first and last names. Impersonating anyone or anything is prohibited. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reactivate this account for any reason. This decision is final", the email read, according to the blogger. This is the moment when the war began. The Facebook users created a special Facebook group called "Let Jon Swift Back into Facebook", urging the engineers to remove the ban and allow the blogger to access the service. Moreover, numerous other bloggers wrote articles to support their friend and demand the removal of the restriction. Finally, the Facebook account was restored as the social network's engineers considered that Jon Swift is not actually infringing the Terms of Use. "Since others on the site seem to know you by this name, and since you don't appear to be using the name to impersonate or to hide your identity, we have determined that you are not violating these Terms. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns", a new email sent to Jon Swift stated.

| Comment #1 by: Anonymous on 09 Aug 2008, 09:53 UTC | reply to this comment | People should wake up and stop using this Orwellian site. I wonder how they found out that he wasn't using his real name? Or could this just be the result of a bug? |
| Comment #1.1 by: LET ME OUT!!!!!!!!! on 18 May 2011, 02:22 GMT | Hi my name is Katie de Thierry
and im here to ask for a chance!!!
Why do we all have to put up with this crap, i thought facebook was a net work for friends and family to have fun and meet new people even talking to friends and family from over seas; but we cant do that if we have to put like "FAKE-NAMES" or even nick names but no face book is a big peice "OF FAKE" |
| Comment #2 by: Jewels on 13 Aug 2008, 10:18 UTC | reply to this comment | I have too had my profile disabled for supposedly being FAKE!!! This is untrue I use the name my work pay slips use and everyone knows me as this so what are they on about?? I do not know. Also, how did they find out what my full length name was?? I guess they probably have all our credit details and addresses too.
They are crazy, yes ok it's fine to make sure people aren't impersonating other people or using extreme fake names but this is just being dumb!!!
I demand my account back and don't you worry I will kick up a stink about it!!!
Thank you that is all |
| Comment #3 by: steadycat on 27 Nov 2008, 21:42 UTC | reply to this comment | The same thing has happened to me. I am a blogger and I too am known by my nick name. Their excuse has been that I must be a business and cannot use their pages for individuals. |
| Comment #4 by: Lotus666 on 23 Jan 2009, 21:15 UTC | reply to this comment | SNAP! My account (of 1 year+ standing) was disabled as being "FAKE", even though I have used this nickname for the past 10 years, and a lot of my friends only know me (therefore, could find me) as such. When I told my workmates (who all use it) they were incredulous, as they know it is not used to defraud or impersonate anyone...and even said "Hell, we all think of you as Lotus666"!
Needless to say I appealed, and got it back (at the sake of putting real name in...but I wished it back only so I could strip out all my pictures, applications and information with the intent of de-activating it, and to advise all my other friends who panicked when they could not find me.
Orwellian site it is indeed - I don't stand up for much, but I WILL NOT be dictated to as to what my nickname should be when it is not being used to harm or mislead people. Also, I can only see it going much worse in probably the not too distant future.
I am heading back over to my beloved MySpace page, which I find much friendlier, and I can at least customise it as and how I want (something which I did not like when Facebook perfunctorily decided I couldn't).
It's really becoming in the nature of a Salem Witch Hunt - poor show, Facebook! |
| Comment #5 by: Freddy on 16 Mar 2009, 18:32 UTC | reply to this comment | I too have noticed this. In fact, some of my friends have used their nicknames on facebook and I have never seen them Deleted before. Twice before, we tried to set up my sister in law. She has a very common surname, and an Afrikaanse name, We used her real name and the website refused to let her join. In fact it refused to let her passed the registration fields.
She has since then used a nick name. LoL, and it let her in then.
So allot of the times, it is all facebook's fault contradicting itself...
Useless people I say.
I may use Facebook, but Twitter is much better and wow, you can use your nickname and have many other blogs to. |
| Comment #6 by: Alan on 18 Mar 2009, 09:48 UTC | reply to this comment | The rules are there for a reason. We want FB to be responsible when things happen to FB users so why shouldn't we follow their rules. You want to join a club, follow the policies. If you don't like it, then get out. There is life without FB. |
| Comment #7 by: me on 13 Apr 2009, 02:38 UTC | reply to this comment | What bothers me about facebook is that they disable accounts without even so much as a warning or a notice about what you might be doing wrong. When it comes to these "fake" names, how do they know? A friend of mine has the name Autumn, it's all over her birth certificate and drivers license, this isn't just some nickname she goes by, it's her real birth name. And facebook deleted her account, along with mine and a few other friends, and now it seems they won't even reply to your e-mails about it. |
| Comment #8 by: Anon Y. Moose on 02 Feb 2010, 04:27 UTC | reply to this comment | This is the reason why I don't use facebook. They're ax-crazy about this policy, that they don't mind if revealing one's real name is a breach of privacy. |
| Comment #9 by: FaceBook Sucks on 03 Apr 2010, 11:01 UTC | reply to this comment | They are banning people all the time for using nicknames, which is contrary to the internet norm. |
| Comment #10 by: Hmm on 05 Jun 2010, 09:37 UTC | reply to this comment | My FB acount has been disabled 3 times without letting me even know why. All they do is reactivate it again about 3-4 weeks later after I send them an e-mail, and not even then tell me why, although I ask. Pretty useless system they've got. |
| Comment #11 by: Nyuszika7H on 22 Jul 2010, 13:31 UTC | reply to this comment | LITANY ALERT! This is a long story, you decide if you read it or just say TL,DNR.
Hi,
I'm 11, living in Hungary and never used social sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace before. Only iWiW any myVIP.
A few days ago, I decided to give Facebook and Twitter a try. I tried to provide Nyuszika7H (my nickname) as my first name and (zero width) spaces as my last name, but Facebook is so strict about this that they know this trick. Then, I tried SpongeBob SquarePants. Well, it was a bad try, they didn't accept it. With Jimmy Neutron, I was able to register, but later I realized that this isn't the best nickname. Tried Sandy Cheeks, didn't wait the 24 hours until approval, instead provided my real name. Interesting, they accepted it immediately, no waiting time. I even uploaded a picture. Later, I almost cried, and decided to deactivate my account. I HATE FACEBOOK! And 1,120,000 other people hates it, according to Google.
Twitter is a completely other world. They allowed me to use Nyuszika7H as my real and nickname, and didn't ban me so far. :)
MySpace, didn't try that, but will try it later and hope it's better than Facebook. |
| Comment #12 by: miss real name on 18 Aug 2010, 01:37 UTC | reply to this comment | this has happened to me. How many people did it take to join the group before the facebook dictators took notice? |
| Comment #13 by: XD on 21 Nov 2010, 17:40 UTC | reply to this comment | I want to create another account but with a name thats not my own, is that bad? I was going to tell everyone that it was really me but i just wanted another account. can i still do it? |
| Comment #14 by: Kandi Queen-Ricci on 21 Jun 2011, 23:07 UTC | reply to this comment | this sucks, I put my real name and they keep telling me it's fake, wth?! urgh, yes my real name looks like a stage name but it is my legal name, and there is nothing I can do about it! Kandi Queen-Ricci |
| Comment #15 by: fr3s1t4 on 18 Jul 2011, 16:49 UTC | reply to this comment | i like facebook but i want to put a nickname to my facebook |

should never be used unless you are leaving yourself open to identy theft. If facebook wants real names, they then should go to User Names and passwords. People are nuts to display their real info but Facebook will toss you out if you don't.
Set your privacy settings all you want but everyone on your friends list and their friends can get your infomation. |
| Comment #16.1 by: nobody on 02 Oct 2011, 15:10 GMT | I can't agree more. People are idiots for giving out real information. Credit card companies and many online shopping sites use your mothers maiden name for verification...and there is it listed on facebook with all the relatives listed out too.
Every smart adult I know uses a fake name. The only people who use their own name are kids and the elderly. Maybe they figure they have nothing to lose. |
| Comment #17 by: sann ny on 27 Oct 2011, 04:15 UTC | reply to this comment | thats not fair i dnt want to use my real name coz i dnt like ....it does't mean there is fake or somthing ...well |
| Comment #18 by: OB III on 05 Nov 2011, 13:07 UTC | reply to this comment | Facebook's "real names only" policy is not only unenforceable and unworkable, it is downright DANGEROUS. It needs to be abolished permanently. It can easily lead to identity theft, and even stalking. |
| Comment #18.1 by: Honduran Ex-pat on 07 Nov 2011, 15:25 GMT | Well said. Going to check out Twitter |
| Comment #19 by: trutherator on 08 Nov 2011, 12:50 UTC | reply to this comment | Mark Twain is also banned on Facebook. Along with an army of Hollywood stars who began using stage names instead of their "real" names while they were still nobodies like us. This is also just voluntary compliance with Police State rules, making it easier for bad guys in and out of official capacity to track us. |
| Comment #19.1 by: Creep_Show on 17 Nov 2011, 05:58 GMT | This is apparently still going on, I've been banned for what I think is a mistake over whether my name is real or not. I even used my real name. I did the form to request reinstatement, got the email they received and telling me to send that same email back for confirmation, after a day and half finally got a reply, telling me they were not going to give it back due to violating their terms. The email was vague about why I was banned, but as is the following seemed to be the main body/focus of the email, I'm assuming it's due to them not believing my name.
"Your account was disabled for violating Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.
After reviewing your situation, we have determined that we will not reactivate your account.
Facebook is a community where people connect and share with friends using their real identities. Claiming to be someone else, creating multiple accounts, or falsely representing an organization undermines the trust and safety of the community." |
| Comment #20 by: bear on 15 Jan 2012, 02:54 UTC | reply to this comment | This is confusing and difficult - especially for people who have birth names, married names and public names - let's say that I have a spouse who is a fairly public person - my spouse does not want our married name on FB - but then lets also imagine that I am a drug and addiction counselor - definitely do not want my clients accessing FB with any of my private and family information - if a person is not deceiving anyone but just wants to be sure of safety and privacy, how can this be wrong? Just saying.... | |
