Jon Swift, a Facebook blogger "who likes to write about politics and culture", was banned on the social networking website because he uses a nickname instead of the real name. It seems that it all started from Facebook's Terms of Use which require the registered members to enter their real first and last name. But the question is how the Facebook employees managed to find out if Jon Swift is the real name or not since the blogger sustains he was never contacted by the website's representatives. All he received was an account
banned-like message without any notification or warning.

"According to Facebook, I am a fake, a charlatan, a nonperson and all of my more than 200 Facebook friends are the victims of a cruel hoax. My crime? Violating Facebook's Terms of Service by not using my "real name." What's next?", Jon Swift wrote on his blog which is hosted by Google's Blogger.

After sending a message to the Facebook employees, Jon received an answer from a representative who informed him that his account infringed the Terms of Use. "Fake accounts are a violation of our Terms of Use. Facebook requires users to provide their real first and last names. Impersonating anyone or anything is prohibited. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reactivate this account for any reason. This decision is final", the email read, according to the blogger.

This is the moment when the war began. The Facebook users created a special Facebook group called "Let Jon Swift Back into Facebook", urging the engineers to remove the ban and allow the blogger to access the service. Moreover, numerous other bloggers wrote articles to support their friend and demand the removal of the restriction. Finally, the Facebook account was restored as the social network's engineers considered that Jon Swift is not actually infringing the Terms of Use.

"Since others on the site seem to know you by this name, and since you don't appear to be using the name to impersonate or to hide your identity, we have determined that you are not violating these Terms. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns", a new email sent to Jon Swift stated.

People should wake up and stop using this Orwellian site. I wonder how they found out that he wasn't using his real name? Or could this just be the result of a bug?

I have too had my profile disabled for supposedly being FAKE!!! This is untrue I use the name my work pay slips use and everyone knows me as this so what are they on about?? I do not know. Also, how did they find out what my full length name was?? I guess they probably have all our credit details and addresses too.

They are crazy, yes ok it's fine to make sure people aren't impersonating other people or using extreme fake names but this is just being dumb!!!

I demand my account back and don't you worry I will kick up a stink about it!!!

Thank you that is all

The same thing has happened to me. I am a blogger and I too am known by my nick name. Their excuse has been that I must be a business and cannot use their pages for individuals.

SNAP! My account (of 1 year+ standing) was disabled as being "FAKE", even though I have used this nickname for the past 10 years, and a lot of my friends only know me (therefore, could find me) as such. When I told my workmates (who all use it) they were incredulous, as they know it is not used to defraud or impersonate anyone...and even said "Hell, we all think of you as Lotus666"!

Needless to say I appealed, and got it back (at the sake of putting real name in...but I wished it back only so I could strip out all my pictures, applications and information with the intent of de-activating it, and to advise all my other friends who panicked when they could not find me.

Orwellian site it is indeed - I don't stand up for much, but I WILL NOT be dictated to as to what my nickname should be when it is not being used to harm or mislead people. Also, I can only see it going much worse in probably the not too distant future.

I am heading back over to my beloved MySpace page, which I find much friendlier, and I can at least customise it as and how I want (something which I did not like when Facebook perfunctorily decided I couldn't).

It's really becoming in the nature of a Salem Witch Hunt - poor show, Facebook!

I too have noticed this. In fact, some of my friends have used their nicknames on facebook and I have never seen them Deleted before. Twice before, we tried to set up my sister in law. She has a very common surname, and an Afrikaanse name, We used her real name and the website refused to let her join. In fact it refused to let her passed the registration fields.

She has since then used a nick name. LoL, and it let her in then.

So allot of the times, it is all facebook's fault contradicting itself...

Useless people I say.
I may use Facebook, but Twitter is much better and wow, you can use your nickname and have many other blogs to.

The rules are there for a reason. We want FB to be responsible when things happen to FB users so why shouldn't we follow their rules. You want to join a club, follow the policies. If you don't like it, then get out. There is life without FB.

What bothers me about facebook is that they disable accounts without even so much as a warning or a notice about what you might be doing wrong. When it comes to these "fake" names, how do they know? A friend of mine has the name Autumn, it's all over her birth certificate and drivers license, this isn't just some nickname she goes by, it's her real birth name. And facebook deleted her account, along with mine and a few other friends, and now it seems they won't even reply to your e-mails about it.

This is the reason why I don't use facebook. They're ax-crazy about this policy, that they don't mind if revealing one's real name is a breach of privacy.
