In case you like shiny things and you’d like to have a gold iPhone 5, you should be on the lookout for bogus Facebook pages that promise such prizes.

Hoax Slayer has come across a fake iPhone 5 Facebook page that promises gold iPhones to anyone willing to like a photo and complete some offers.

“If you guys didn't catch the message earlier, we have TWENTY more limited edition Gold iPhone 5's to THE FIRST PEOPLE TO COMPLETE THE STEPS. To enter: Step 1) Like this photo. Step 2) AND THEN to claim your free Gold iPhone visit -> [Link],” the scam posts read.

The photo used for the scam has been taken from the website of Goldgenie, a company that specializes in customized luxury items.

Of course, no one gets to win the gold iPhone 5. Instead, the scammers that run the scheme are trying to get users to visit the website that hosts surveys.

When they visit the site mentioned in the Facebook posts, victims are instructed to complete one of five offers in order to enter the sweepstakes. The surveys vary depending on the user’s location.

No matter how many surveys you complete, you can’t win the promised prize. The cybercrooks on the other hand make a certain amount of money each time they trick someone.

Furthermore, many of the surveys are designed to trick internauts into entering their mobile phone numbers. By doing so, they’re unwittingly singing up for premium services that can seriously inflate their bills.

In addition to making money via the survey sites, the scammers can also make some money from selling the Facebook page they use to run the scam. Facebook pages with a large number of likes can be worth a lot on the underground market.

Beware of offers that sound too good to be true! Legitimate competitions are always announced on the official social media pages of the respective companies.
