News about Facebook working on a new application called Moments emerged last year, but after that, no other information was available regarding it.

Fast forward one year, Facebook has announced that Moments application is now available for download on both Android and iOS platforms (sorry Windows Phone users).

In short, Moments allows users to privately share photos with their friends. But here is an example from real life on how Moments can help you achieve that.

“When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you’re in back.

“Syncing photos with the Moments app is a private way to give photos to friends and get the photos you didn’t take. Moments groups the photos on your phone based on when they were taken and, using facial recognition technology, which friends are in them. You can then privately sync those photos quickly and easily with specific friends, and they can choose to sync their photos with you as well,” the company explains.

It uses facial recognition technology to group photos

In addition to being able to sync your photos with your friends, Moments can also keep all synced photos organized. It also allows users to search them to find the ones in which they or specific friends appear.

Basically, the application uses facial recognition technology to group the photos from the Gallery based on the friends who are in them.

According to Facebook, this is the same technology that powers tag suggestions on its Facebook social network.

You can now download Moments for Android for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Android 4.0 and up.

For iOS users, the application is available for download via App Store. It should work smoothly on all devices running iOS 7.0 or later.
