Facebook Messenger is no longer a U.S.-only application. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users worldwide can now access their country’s version of the iTunes App Store and immediately download the free app.

The relatively new, standalone instant-messaging application for subscribers to the popular social networking service, Facebook, was released for iOS customers last month.

It was officially confirmed in a blog post signed Lucy Zhang, who said at the time, “You should be able to write a message, click ‘Send’ and know that you will reach the person right away.”

The app, now available globally, delivers exactly that. However, sending to phone numbers is not available in all countries, Facebook cautions.

Present on the U.S. Apple App Store for over a month now, the app comes with a short description that tells customers what it does:

“Facebook Messenger is a faster way to send mobile messages to friends. With Messenger, you can send and receive messages with any of your friends or anyone in your mobile contacts list.”

A list of key features is also offered (reproduced below)

Messenger lets you:

• Send messages instantly to other friends who have Messenger • Chat with friends who are on Facebook • Get free push notifications for incoming messages • Reach friends via text message if they don't have Messenger yet • Create group conversations for making plans on the go • Add more friends to group conversations at any time • Attach photos and location to messages • Control alert settings for each conversation

Since its initial release, the app also received an update which improves the ability to copy and paste text, adds links to phone numbers and addresses, and fixes an issue that sometimes caused the app to crash.

Facebook is yet to launch their native iPad client, despite accidentally leaking an almost complete tablet version of the app in July.
