It also comes with Groups and Forwarding new features

One of the few Android applications that have been downloaded more than 500 million times via Google Play Store, Facebook Messenger has just received a major update that brings several new features and lots of improvements.

The first things long-time Facebook Messenger users will notice after upgrading to version 4.0 that has just been released on Google Play Store is the Groups icon.

With the latest version of Facebook Messenger, users will be able to create groups for the people they message most. The new feature also allows users to name these groups, set group photos and keep them all in one place for easier access.

But this is not the only major new feature included in this update. The official changelog that accompanies the latest Facebook Messenger update also mentions that it brings free calls.

Basically, you will be able to talk as long as you want and stay in touch with your friends and family for free, but only while connected to a Wi-Fi network, otherwise standard data charges will apply.

You can now forward messages to contacts who are not present in a conversation

The next new feature that users will be able to take advantage of in Facebook Messenger 4.0 is “forwarding.” Developers confirmed they have added the ability to send a message or photo to someone who isn’t in the conversation by simply tapping to forward it on.

Last but not least, the update brings some conversation shortcuts that users can create so that they can get to any conversation right from their home screen. This is a nifty new feature that makes it easier for Facebook Messenger addicts to continue their conversations with a single tap.

We suspect Facebook may have added some under-the-hood changes as well, which should probably make the application feel snappier and smoother.

Although the official changelog doesn’t mention anything in this regard, there may be some performance improvements and small bug fixes included as well.

If you don’t already have the application installed on your smartphone, you can now download Facebook Messenger for Android 4.0 for free via Google Play store.

According to developers, this version of the application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Android 2.1 and up.

Keep in mind that the new update will be rolled out in stages, so it might take a while until it reaches all devices in all regions. Make sure you check Google Play Store from time to time and see if version 4.0 is available for download.
