Facebook's just updated its Messenger app for Android. Messenger is a standalone app that you can pretty much figure out what it does, it's a way of accessing your Facebook messages on your phone without having to go into the Facebook app.
It's also a simple way of chatting with your Facebook friends on the go. But the latest update brought some new functionality, the ability to send and receive SMS messages along with the regular Facebook messages and emails.
This is a big move
and a potentially important one. Facebook, Google and Apple battle to become the center of your communications, albeit Facebook and Google have a bigger chance.
But Facebook has one disadvantage, it doesn't have a mobile platform, so getting its app to act as the default SMS app on a mobile phone is a great way of leveling the field. This can only happen on Android of course, and even there only on some devices.
