Shortly after unveiling its new Lite application for Android devices, Facebook announced a new major update is now available for its Android and iOS apps.

The latest update brings one new feature that will allow Facebook users to send their location as messages.

It looks like Facebook has been working on this particular feature over the last couple of months and has been able to make it work only recently.

Beginning today, Facebook confirmed that it would start the rollout of this particular new feature instead of their previous location sharing function.

According to Facebook, “sending a location is completely optional,” so nothing will change about how the company receive their location information.

In order to share your location, simply tap the More icon or the location pin at the bottom of the screen. You can then tell someone to meet you in a certain location by sending him/her a map of where it is. You can also send that person a map of the exact location where you are.

Developers also point out that Messenger doesn't get any location information from your device unless you enable location services for the application.

Furthermore, Messenger should not get any location information from the device in the background, only each time you select a location and tap Send when you use the Messenger app.

Facebook promises that with the latest version of Messenger, users will have full control over when and how you share your location info.

If you don't have the application yet, you can now download Messenger for Android for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Android 4.0 and up.

For iOS users, the application can be downloaded via App Store. It should work smoothly on all devices running iOS 7.0 or later.
