After updating its instant messaging app with iOS 7 graphics and the ability to message people in their phone book, Facebook is seeing its Messenger app shooting for the stars on iTunes.

On November 18, the social media giant decided to treat its customers to a brand new update, featuring an iOS 7 redesign, the ability to text people in your Address Book, and a new way to add contacts: entering a phone number.

All this managed to rack up hoards of new adopters, pushing the Facebook Messenger app to the top of the Free Downloads chart in the US App Store.

According to the social network, “Messenger is a fast, free and reliable way to stay in touch. It's just like texting, but you don't have to pay for every message.” Competing with WhatsApp and other free text messaging services, Facebook Messenger is finally taking its rightful place among the top SMS killers.
