"Google" is Bing's number two

Not that there’s anyone doubting that Facebook is the biggest thing online right now, but here’s yet another sign. The number one searched query on all major search engines is now ‘facebook.’ The number three search term: ‘facebook login’ or ‘facebook.com.’ Clearly, Facebook users aren’t exactly tech savvy. Then again, there’s almost 500 million of them worldwide, so nothing should be surprising at this point.

“Experian Hitwise announced today that the search term Facebook was the top U.S. search conducted in the four weeks ending March 27, 2010. Overall, Facebook related terms accounted for eight searches across the three top 10 lists,” a report by analytics firm Hitwise read.

“Yahoo! related terms accounted for six spots while MySpace terms accounted for four searches across the search engines. Other search terms that were among the top 10 searches for all three search engines include youtube, facebook login, craigslist and yahoo mail,” it added.

These stats may baffle those with any inclination towards computers or this thing called the Internet, but they come up time and time again. Advanced concepts like ‘URLs’ confuse the average Facebook user and complex topics like login pages fare no better.

At this point, there’s no way to change it, searching for everything is pretty much ingrained in most Internet users’ way of thinking. It’s easy to pick on these, less-than-experienced users, though, the fact is, everyone just uses a search engine rather than trying to remember the addresses of all the sites they visit. Still, ‘facebook.com’ is not really the hardest URL to remember.

Even so, ‘facebook.com’ is the third most searched item on Yahoo and at number seven on Bing. Yahoo isn’t doing too bad either, a lot of people are looking for things like ‘yahoo’ or ‘yahoo mail.’ Another interesting term, ‘google’ is the second most popular query on Bing.
