After announcing its rather favorable results for the first quarter, it seems that Facebook is working on some changes to keep its more than 1 billion monthly active users satisfied.

Mashable reports that an inside source has revealed that Facebook is currently working on making some adjustments to the notification tab, trying to turn it into more or less of a news portal.

"We are testing an updated Notifications tab that adds additional, relevant content about everything that might be helpful to know on a particular day," the source claims.

Although the first quarter results made everyone think that Facebook would concentrate more on its video content, given that the website had managed to score about 4 billion views a day, it seems that the company is more concentrated on its efficiently delivering the news content to its users.

The new tab will gather important news in one place

The reports unveiled that the new notification tab will contain eight main sections, as follows: Birthdays, Life Events, Events, Nearby Places, Trending Topics, News Shared Locally, Today in the Past and Nearby Friends.

The Today in the Past feature is somewhat similar to another enhancement that Facebook has recently revealed called "On this Day" which lets users know about some updates, photos, or posts of any kind from a few years back. This function was meant to allow users to reminiscence some posts from the past.

At this point users are given the possibility to choose whether they like only some or all of these options to appear in their notification tab.

It remains to be seen if users will still have the option to decide what they want to see, or if all the sections will be included by default in the new notification tab.

Furthermore, with the Nearby Friends option you will get to see only those people who have agreed to this option. You are given the choice to opt out in case you do not want your friends to know where you are.

This new feature will help users get a clearer view of the content, and the structure on sections could help them get to what they are interested in faster and more effectively.
