Facebook has unofficially announced, via its blog, that the social network has reached 100 million users. “We hit a big milestone today -- 100 million people around the world are now using Facebook. This is a really gratifying moment for us because it means a lot that you have decided that Facebook is a good, trusted place for you to share your lives with your friends. So we just wanted to take this moment to say, ‘thanks’.” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of the company, yesterday.
Senior Platform Manager at Facebook Dave Morin chose another, more unusual method to announce the big achievement. He changed his status on the Twitter account to “We just hit 100,000,000 Facebook users!!!” Although the approach of the network in time was focused more on updates than on bragging about the level of popularity reached, the 100 million users mark must have been too important to be ignored.
“We spend all our time here trying to build the best possible product that enables you to share and stay connected, so the fact that we're growing so quickly all over the world is very rewarding. Thanks for all your support and stay tuned for more great things in the future.” Zuckerberg announced.
comScore, the Internet stats measurement company, indicated in one of its latest reports that the number of users who visited Facebook pages in June surpassed 130 million. So, it's comScore's word against Facebook's. Since the social network wouldn’t have anything to win from underestimating its own performances, it's probably a matter of registered users, because people “from the outside” can still have a glance at one feature or another, read some of the comments, and so on and so forth.
What is certain is that, although the growth pace of Facebook in its home country is not as spectacular as the one on a global scale, most heavy Internet users have an account on this network. “It’s really starting to feel like back in the day you were the odd one out if you didn’t have a fax machine, cell phone, email. Now you’re totally behind the times if you don’t have a Facebook account!” comments, with good reason, one user.
