Facebook's advertising business is booming, makes up for 92 percent of revenues

Despite the fact that it is already a huge company, Facebook continues to grow. In fact, the company’s advertising business is going better and better and the second quarter saw a climb of 61 percent in revenues from this sector.

Facebook’s revenue for the year’s second quarter rose to $2.9 billion (€2.15 billion), 61 percent over the same period of 2013, while the net income was at $791 million (€588 million), up 138 percent, leading to diluted earnings per share of $0.42 (€0.31).

These great results can be “blamed” on the company’s advertising department. Revenue from advertising was $2.68 billion (€1.99 billion), 67 percent over the same quarter of last year. Mobile advertising represented approximately 62 percent of this sum, making for a rather impressive growth.

Considering that only a couple of years ago Facebook didn’t even want to implement advertising on its mobile platform, the importance of this step is that much more obvious given the money flowing from this direction and into Facebook’s pockets.

The social network saw an average of 829 million daily active users throughout June, 19 percent over last year’s results, while the number of mobile daily users rose 39 percent to 654 million.

The number of monthly active users has reached 1.32 billion as of June 30, 14 percent over last year’s number and, once more, a really impressive feat for Facebook. The number of mobile monthly users also stayed above the important milestone, reaching 1.07 billion, 31 percent better than last year.

“We had a good second quarter,” said Zuckberg, the company’s founder and CEO. “Our community has continued to grow, and we see a lot of opportunity ahead as we connect the rest of the world.”

He is, of course, hinting here at his efforts to bring Internet to everyone in the world. Connecting more people to the Internet would also mean that there are more individuals who could be using Facebook.

Statistics show that there were some 2.77 billion Internet users last year, which means that nearly half of these logging onto Facebook at least once a month. Since Facebook hasn’t shared in a while just how many accounts are on the platform, it’s hard to tell just how many of the world’s Internet users have tried out Facebook.

Either way, Facebook isn’t alone in trying to bring more people to the Internet. In fact, Google has basically been working on the same project, but it’s been doing more about finding ways to actually deliver the necessary infrastructure. Project Loon is one example, while another is just a rumor at this point, namely WiFi delivered via satellites.
